CBM and Ellis Don team up to win 2009 Greensite Project of the Year

Bay Adelaide Centre is a 52-story, 1.2 million square-foot office building in downtown Toronto which presented some unique logistic and scheduling challenges. The construction team was able to meet the demanding schedule while using materials and practices that would allow owners to submit the project for LEED Gold Canada certification.

Construction of the buildings core walls was the job’s main challenge. The core walls required more then 16,500 cubic meters of concrete which was about one-third of the concrete on the entire job. In addition, this concrete had to meet unique requirements. The concrete had to achieve a compressive strength of 60 MPa in 91 days, 8 MPa in 12 hours, flow through vertical pumps more then 50 stories high, and qualify for LEED certification.

The team selected self-consolidating concrete, with Canada Building Materials’ LISA Maximizer. Formwork had to be almost watertight and be able to handle the concrete mix’s added pressure.

CBM and Ellis Don were honoured as one of the Concrete Producer and Concrete Construction Magazines 2009 Greensite Projects of the Year.
