Cost-Effective Alternative to Lead-Lined Drywall

Lead-lined drywall, also known as sheetrock, gyproc, wallboard or gypsum board, is often a go-to product for builders who want to ensure a continuous layer of radiation protection, while maintaining versatility and simplicity during application on almost any surface.

MarShieldTM lead-lined drywall is laminated with 99.9% pure sheet lead, which meets or exceeds federal specifications. The product allows for a simple, one-step application; however, the added weight of the lead can prove to be strenuous on the drywall. Fortunately, there is an alternative.

A cost-effective option involves using sheet lead underneath regular drywall. The sheet lead will allow for the required continuous layer of radiation shielding, while minimizing the strain of the additional weight on the drywall. Purchasing MarShieldTM sheet lead and covering it with drywall purchased directly from a local supplier may be a better, and more cost-effective, option for your application.

If lead-lined drywall is still preferred, extra care must be taken during handling, storage and installation to ensure the drywall does not succumb to the additional weight. Smaller customized widths and lengths can also help eliminate cracks or breaks.

Before ordering MarShieldTM lead-lined drywall, consider the following:

1. Lead-lined drywall takes up more room on a truck; therefore, freight costs will be greater, compared to one small pallet containing sheet lead.

2. When shipping lead-lined drywall, MarShieldTM takes all available precautions in ensuring the drywall is protected from damage. Unfortunately, there is a chance some of the material will arrive cracked or broken while in transit due to the additional weight.

3. Although only requiring one-step, the installation of the lead-lined drywall is more difficult due to the heavy weight of the material. A two-step process with sheet lead and regular drywall could be more appropriate.

MarShieldTM, a div. of Mars Metal Company, has over 30 years of experience in providing radiation protection.
